Five students, grades 3
through 5, have participated in the American Lung Association’s (ALA) school
curriculum, Open Airways for Schools. Over the course of four 35 minute
classes, students have been sharing their knowledge about asthma with each
other and are becoming what the ALA calls “asthma experts.”
The essence of the program is empowerment as students
learn to take control of their asthma and make healthy choices. Following these
four classes, the five students will have the opportunity to teach younger
students with asthma some of the skills they have been practicing.
School Nurse, Mimi Benedict,
RN, MPH, became certified as an Open Airways Instructor by the ALA in order to
facilitate these workshops.
