Vernal Pool Project in Grade 5

Our Cove School 5th graders have been working on a vernal pool place based learning project.  Students had to analyze and interpret data from a staff and parent survey on visitation to the Cove School Vernal Pool.  One of the problems they discovered was that students were not visiting the vernal pool regularly.  A possible solution was to create a sign so visitors would know here the entrance to the pool could be found.  Our fifth graders worked on a vernal pool poster contest and one lucky fifth grader was chosen.  Congratulations to our winner Mars Orfanos on his vernal pool poster!!!

Grade 5 Move-Up Day

“Our aspirations are our possibilities.”
-Robert Browning

January 5, 2015

Dear Grade 5 Parents/Guardians:

At this time, many of you may be thinking about your fifth grade son’s/daughter's transition to middle school next year. This transition is clearly an important event in your child's life, and one that we would like to make as smooth and comfortable as possible.

In order to facilitate this transition into middle school, we have scheduled two separate events.  Our first event is our Grade 5 Move-Up Night, scheduled for Thursday, January 22, 2015.  You and your child are invited to learn about Briscoe Middle School and meet some members of its faculty, beginning at 7:00 PM in the school’s auditorium.  During this evening, you will hear from the school’s administration, guidance counselors, and current 6th grade teachers.  In addition, you will be afforded the opportunity to tour the building with your child after the presentation in the auditorium.  Please mark your calendars for Thursday, January 22nd at 7:00 PM.  We hope to see you all there!

Our second event will be scheduled for the spring of 2015.  At this time, administrators from Briscoe will be visiting your child’s elementary school for a question and answer session.  Prior to this visit, we will be providing transition forms to your child’s teacher so that we may begin scheduling for our 2014-2015 school year.

We all look forward to meeting you and your child on Thursday, January 22, 2015 at 7:00 PM in the Briscoe Middle School Auditorium.

Sincerely,

Mr. Matthew P. Poska             Mrs. Amy Gerade                     Mr. Terrence Conant

A Letter from Mr. Poska, Briscoe Middle School Principal

November 12, 2014

Dear Parents and Guardians of Grade 5 Students:

I am writing to inform you that the Briscoe Middle School will be hosting our annual Principal’s Coffee for parents/guardians of current Grade 5 students who attend the Beverly Public Schools or reside in Beverly.  This event will be held on Friday, December 5, 2014 from 9:30 AM to approximately 10:30 AM in the Briscoe Middle School Library.

The purpose of this event is to give parents/guardians an opportunity to visit the building, discuss the Grade 6 curriculum and schedule, as well as address other questions that you may have regarding Briscoe Middle School.  It is our hope to provide you with the information necessary to make a well-informed decision about your child’s future educational pursuits.  In addtion, we will be hosting a Grade 5 Move Up Night for all students and parents/guardians on Thursday, January 22, 2015.  I will pass along more information regarding this event at a later date.

If you are planning on attending the Principal’s Coffee, I would appreciate it if you could notify my secretary, Ms. Lynda DeCourcy, at 978-921-6103 X151, so that we may accommodate all individuals who wish to attend.  I look forward to meeting many of you on the 5th!
